Community Partnerships

George Mason University's expansion in Prince William County is in part built on the university's unique partnership with area businesses, including American Type Culture Collection, Micron,Verizon, Lockheed Martin, and others.

Through these partnerships, the George Mason Prince William Campus offers an opportunity for students to be involved in current research and gain access to facilities and employment opportunities at these companies. In turn, the university will provide workers at these facilities with training opportunities to enhance their communication skills and job proficiency.

American Type Culture Collection

The American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) is a global bioscience organization that houses the world's largest and most diverse archive of biological materials. ATCC serves as a biological product supplier and an industry service provider, offering technical services and educational programs to private industry and academic organizations. School of Computational Sciences

(formerly called the Institute for Biosciences, Bioinformatics, and Biotechnology)

The School of Computational Sciences is a joint venture between the ATCC and George Mason. The School will combine research and educational programs in the biosciences. The project is an effort to maximize research efforts by combining the academic and applied approaches to research. The School's first activity was to teach an ATCC course in DNA techniques modified for George Mason students. Visit the School of Computational Sciences website at http://www.ib3.gmu.edu/.

Community Assessment on Education

Because one of the main emphases of the campus is on the community connections, Prince William has begun to design programs to fit the community needs. An assessment of the educational needs for neighboring population of 100,000 residents has already uncovered a local need for education in:

Computer Science,
Business Administration,
Education, and
Health and Nursing.

George Mason, in conjunction with the Northern Virginia Community Colleges, may develop several 2+2 programs (two years at a NVCC and two years at George Mason would culminate in a university degree). These programs would be in administration of justice, biology, computer science, and electrical engineering.

Micron

Micron is one of the world's leading providers of advanced semiconductor solutions used in today's leading-edge computing, consumer, networking, and communications products. The Company manufactures and markets DRAMs, Flash memory, CMOS image sensors, other semiconductor components, and memory modules. Micron's common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) under the MU symbol.

While maintaining its position as one of the most efficient DRAM producers in the world, Micron's continued growth has enabled the Company to emerge as one of the largest DRAM megabit producers in the industry. Micron's innovative technology and manufacturing model continue to strengthen the Company's position in the industry. Micron provides an ever-broadening product line with increased emphasis on meeting the needs of the segmented technology market. During the first calendar quarter of 2003, the majority of Micron's high-volume semiconductor production was started on 0.13µ process technology at its manufacturing locations worldwide. The 0.13µ process is reaching mature yields, and the Company is currently ramping 0.11µ process technology at its manufacturing locations worldwide.

Lockheed Martin

Lockheed Martin is a well-known government contractor providing services in the aerospace industry, defense electronics, information systems, and energy/environment sectors.
